X Factor USA 2011: Chris Rene performs Love Don't Live Here Anymore
It looks very much like The X Factor is going to play on Chris Rene‘s drug-addict background a lot. Fair enough, because it’s inspirational that he’s turned his life around. But we do question the wisdom of making his addiction such a pressure point – with a whole nation (okay, half the expected audience, but still) watching him and entering an industry where the temptation of drugs is ever present.
Anyway, let’s concentrate on the performance. Chris sang the Rose Royce classic Love Don’t Live Here Anymore. He gave a far more understated performance than many on the night, just him and a microphone. But he came across as self-assured and was laid back and natural on stage.
The song choice was a touch underwhelming, and Chris wasn’t always on the money tuning-wise, but not bad for a first night performance. We love his soulful voice, and were glad to see he hadn’t lost his natural look – he hit the stage wearing baseball cap and t-shirt. What he really needs right now are some more modern R&B tunes to showcase that voice box and prove that he hold his own in the contemporary charts!
Nicole Scherzinger told Chris that he gave a strong performance, but questioned the song choice: “I don’t know personally if I would’ve picked that song for you.” Paula Abdul had much to say about Chris’ truthfulness and authenticity and Simon remarked that he wasn’t have the best singer in the competition, but he had the best recording voice. LA Reid told him he liked that he was unpredictable.
Were you a fan of Chris Rene’s first live performance on X Factor USA? And do you think he should keep singing retro classic or move to more modern tunes?
