Watch the video for Rebecca Ferguson's debut single 'Nothing's Real But Love'
Last year’s X Factor runner-up usually has the career prospects of yesterday’s newspapers (i.e. they’re tomorrow’s fish and chip wrappers). But we’re going to turn our inherent scepticism of X Factor contestants off – a radical departure, sit down if all this is making you feel light-headed.
Rebecca Ferguson, who was a far superior vocalist to last year’s X Factor winner Matt Cardle, is about to drop her debut single. Titled Nothing’s Real But Love, the single is released on 27th November. If you need a timely reminder of why Rebecca was so very special, you need to watch the video at the bottom of this post – the normally shy songstress puts in a commanding performance here, with a confident soulful vocal that almost fills the gap in the market left by a certain beehived singer.
This is nothing like the disjointed throwaway electro-pop that her Syco stablemates are releasing – Rebecca’s probably even surpassed Matt Cardle by releasing a single that manages to be genuinely stirring. (Let’s face it, Matt’s first post-X Factor single is so forgettable I can’t even remember the name!) Nothing’s Real But Love taps into the vibe of a million soul classics, but Rebecca’s unique voice escapes any charges of sounding like Adele, Aretha, whatever.
Of course, on the flip side, this track may not have the mass market appeal that the One Directions and Cher Lloyds have experienced, but that shouldn’t detract from Miss Ferguson’s unique tone and her distinctly tasteful, feminine way of performing. We love it.
