The X Factor USA 2012: Cece Frey Gets Vulnerable With Lady Gaga, Bombs With Katy Perry

Cece Frey's original X Factor audition

Cece Frey is the underdog this season on The X Factor USA. Tonight she kicked off the show with an acoustic version of Lady Gag’s “Edge of Glory.” The song was the perfect fit for Cece who in a way is trying to be just like the “artsy” popstar. She felt she could use the song to show that she really does have the talent to be on the show, but unfortunately this didn’t come across too well.

The song started off strong, so I will be fair and admit that I do like the tone to Cece’s voice when she is in mid-octave. However, the moment she jumps to the high or low notes, she falls off pitch. Some people can cover this up with adlibbing, but Cece just sounds awful. When the chorus kicked in she once again showed that she doesn’t have any control over her voice. Any time that she needs to have a bit of power she comes off more as shouting than singing. I’m not sure how she and Demi miss this when they play back performances each week. The more she shouts, the more off pitch she gets.

The judges had mixed reactions, but Simon Cowell and Britney Spears speak the truth. Sure, you can put on a “good” performance, but is it worth $5 million? No.

  • L.A. Reid: You know what we’ve proven? Sometimes we get it wrong because I’m becoming a fan. It was good.
  • Britney Spears: I have to disagree. I think right now at this point in the competition it should be great, but that was just good.
  • Simon Cowell: When I talk to you back stage I like you, you’re a nice person. I don’t think you’re worth a $5 million recording contract. I thought it was good. It was a little too cabaret for me more than acoustic. It was good, but not great.
  • Demi Lovato: I have to disagree, Cece. I think it was your best vocal performance. There’s a reason why you’ve stayed in this competition. It’s because of your fans at home.

Part Two- Katy Perry’s “Part of Me”

Fans voted for Cece to perform “Part of Me” and this could have been a huge comeback for the wanna be popstar.

Cece, Cece, Cece. I’ve decided she has two big downfalls. 1. She has no definite personality and if you do you fail to show it. Every time she comes out on stage she has a different style to match whatever song she is performing. If it’s anything I’ve learned from carefully watching singing competitions is that this is the key to failure. Copycats don’t win, it’s those who know who they are as artists. I was turned off of this performance the moment that Cece appeared with dyed hair just like Katy Perry would have on. Her outfit also looked like she pulled it from Katy Perry’s closet.

2. I feel like a broken record saying this, but STOP SHOUTING. I actually really liked this performance at first. I thought Katy Perry was a good choice because she, like Cece, does not have a strong singing voice. There is little range in most of her songs. Cece sounded quite strong at the beginning of the song, but the moment that the background singers came in she started shouting again. After the chorus she then went into an awkward rap, and I decided I was too uncomfortable with the chaotic vocal mess. You almost had me for the first time this season, Cece!

The judges could not agree with the quality of this performance.

  • L.A. Reid: Cece, you know how to make this difficult for me. I loved you earlier. Not loving it. I felt like that was karaoke. If there was ever a karaoke performance, that was it.
  • Britney Spears: I found it very entertaining. I felt like you always look like you’re having fun on stage. I loved it.
  • Simon Cowell: I actually liked how you were defiant during that entire performance. If you do go, I will miss you because you’re a trier.

Unreality Rating: 6/10- Cece was bearable this week, but let’s be honest- she’s NOTHING compared to everyone else on this show. It makes me annoyed that better talent was voted off and she remains week after week. I’m waiting for her to prove that she belongs in the competition, but she doesn’t do this. Her vocals are terrible and she has little confidence.

Do you think Cece will FINALLY be eliminated this week?

Ms. Melissa Warner – it appears that either you have been paid handsomely to promote certain acts over others or are simply biased towards your particular favorites. Your “ear” is not as perfect as you would have some believe… Mr. Tate Stevens is not only an accomplished vocalist (moreso than most of the remaining acts), but he also moves about the stage and can play an instrument or two. Yes, Ms. Carly Rose has beautiful vocals, but she has yet to move around the stage and sing at the same time (translation: challenge herself like the other groups have been made to do). Of course, she then might jeoprodize those “perfect” notes – where is the entertainment value in strictly standing motionless in front of a microphone? Notice how much better Cece Frey sings when she can stand still too? Hardly fair to dump on her more active numbers, when she is actually doing choreography while singing – not an easy feat for anyone! Diamond White is hard on the ears – predictable and copy cat. Little originality for her. The groups, if anything, are predictable, and have become boring as well. The judges comments have also become predictable – you can tell whom they favour, and how this will all play out – the writing is on the wall, or rather on their judging and producers’ sheets…. Top two most talented AND entertaining acts are Tate Stevens (his voice abilities equals/rivals that of Sonenclar, I would say, he’s more versatile, and has a very nice vibrato and pitch). As long as Stevens gets some decent song choices from here on in (provided the judges don’t fix his exit tomorrow in order to ensure a teeny bopper win), he will be a serious contender to win or final along with Sonenclar. If Sonenclar is worthy of winning, she should try dancing and singing simultaneously, playing an instrument, and trying something new and upbeat. The XFactor should stand for more than a one trick pony. Good luck to the remaining contestants, including CeCe who may just continue to defy the odds, if for nothing else, than to piss the judges off (and they deserve that at least). Shall see what tomorrow brings.

I cannot agree more. I also think that Demi Lovato backed the wrong horse. Also her two most talented acts she has actually killed of any change they might have had through out the live shows. what a total melt down in one of the most talented groups.

  3. Luke says:

It’s hard to explain really, but I get Cece. I really really do.
It’s hard for me to be a fan of her and know that talent in the vocal department exist far beyond her’s, but she’s funny. Literally she’s hilarious in real life, has a great personality and isn’t afraid to be a little controversial. Polarizing and audience is what made Katy, Nicki and Gaga the global superstars they are. Cece is no different, if anything the amount of arguing going on over her is all the proof I or anyone else should need that she will make it in the industry. She even has an ex Disney princess on her side.

I’m going to miss Cece when she goes (which she will), she was the most exciting and unpredictable contestant, stirred up arguments like you wouldn’t believe and really sparked a hard core fan in me. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

And haters can go on hating, because you’re entitled to your own opinion. Just know that you’re increasing Cece’s chances of success by doing so.

  4. fanfan says:

She does not sing bad, it’s just her VOICE!
Her voice is in this way, I mean when she talks I hear it, it’s not specially because of the vocals, her voice is just…special.

I’m a fan of her, seriously I think she’s great, beautiful, funny and for me, she does not seem unlikeable so I don’t get the haters…

Anyway, she dances and sings at the same time…

  5. Sheila Anderson says:

I really believe that CeCe Frey will go along ways in life as long as she keeps fighting and does not give up. I like you and so does my daughter.

    Lots of Love,

    Sheila and Joyess

  6. Samantha says:

I hope she goes home to be honest. I don’t understand why she got through the audition, she is okay but she is not x faqctor material and the part of me performance was horrible (sorry cece)

  7. Amie Powell says:

I hope cece’s go home she can’t sing to save herself..cece’s should off went home last week..
The backup singers are better than her to be honest.. My dog can sing better than her if I had a dog lol.. Sori cece’s but you won’t make it to the semis u be going hme
