The Voice: Trevin Hunte Breaks Out of the Ballad Mold with Usher
Tonight I really want to see Trevin Hunte break out of the power singer mold and really give us something else. A rocker, something that requires some control or depth – I don’t know, just something different. He needs to prove that he can do styles other than Whitney or Michael Bolton. Carson says he’s showing a more upbeat side tonight – good! CeeLo tells Jennifer that they’re on the fence about what they want to do. Trevin wants to do Scream by Usher, because he wants to show that he has a funner side. CeeLo and Jennifer aren’t sure, but Trevin convinces them that he really wants to try it. Jennifer connects with his shyness and encourages him to “get out there and celebrate.”
The Performance
Now see, this is what I was talking about. It’s not my favorite song in the whole world, but Trevin’s showing a great amount of control and only letting the holler out when it’s warranted. He’s even, like, dancing up there. I am definitely impressed. He looks young and vibrant and holy Moses the high notes in the bridge are ridonkulous. Yes Trevin, this. This is what we’ve wanted to see. Good on ya. The crowd is going completely insane.
Over To the Coaches
- Christina Aguilera – I think that this was my favorite moment coming from you. I say good for you – as entertainers we have to keep ourselves inspired. You’re young, you were living.
- Adam Levine – I truly believe that you can sing, dare I say, anything, and it’ll sound good. It’s not my favorite moment that you’ve had, but it was good.
- CeeLo Green – I trusted you and wanted you to know that I support you, and I’m glad that that paid off. Most importantly for me was to see you alive and young and free and happy and confident.
Finally Trevin has proven that he can do more than ballads. Fantastic.

Brave move to come out and sing a dance-pop number, but this was what I was talking about when I commented about Bryan Keith. At least Trevin is trying to be a little bit more contemporary. It didn’t completely work for me – Usher has a lot more clarity in his voice, and Trevin’s enunciation sounded thick and muddy in places. He could’ve tried singing it a little higher as well. But otherwise, I applaud him for trying something different!
