The Voice Makes Major Changes for Season Three
The Voice is up against The X Factor USA for its third run, so producers are looking for a way to add an even bigger competitive edge to the singing competition. At a press preview over the weekend, executive producer Mark Burnett explained that fans can expect one major change this season.
Burnett feels the best way to add a bigger competition is to pin the coaches against each other more this season than ever before. During the battle rounds the coaches will eliminate one contestant, but the other three judges have a chance to “steal” two contestants to add to their team.
The judges can hit their button and add the contestant to their team at this point. If more than one judge wants to steal them, the contestant gets to choose which team he will join. After the judges increase their teams from eight to 10, a “knockout round” will occur. The coaches will then make another elimination, creating a team of five. These 20 contestants then move on to the live shows.
So far the show has found the format is working. “It worked better than we hoped. It’s been a kind experience,” Burnett said.
The Voice returns on September 10 at 8/7c on NBC. Read more about the upcoming season here.
