The Voice: Cassadee Pope Gives an Emotional Performance of Blake’s Over You
Cassadee Pope has proven to be a strong vocalist, but I’m still waiting for her to peak in the competition. She does a good job with every song but she needs her big moment to happen soon if she wants to stick around. That said, I’m pulling for her to really kill it this evening. Tonight she’s performing Over You, written by Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. She’s grateful that they let her do it. The song was written about the loss of Blake’s brother, and Cassadee equates the lyric with losing her grandfather. She feels the emotion in the song and the rehearsal sounds pretty good. She’s really nervous that she’ll cry, and Blake says that he is as well.

The Performance
Cassadee looks terrific with a simple white dress/pants thing and a cute updo. Her voice is so clean and clear here. She’s got a violin and cello as accompaniment. It’s really pretty, though the really low notes are so quiet they almost disappear. It’s another emotional performance and Cassadee pulls it off with both clarity and emotion that make for a really endearing combination.
Feedback From the Coaches
- Adam Levine – The emotional connection was obvious, but I started thinking about how this was so remarkably different and it suited you the best. I never thought I’d say this but I want to see more country music from you.
- CeeLo Green – You most certainly look beautiful and your voice was flawless. That was a big moment.
- Christina Aguilera – Such a moment for you, thank you for taking me on that ride with you. Looking so lovely, you sold it, you sold everything about that. Blake was looking like a proud papa. I was touched, thank you.
- Blake Shelton – You just sang easily the most important and most personal song that I’ve ever been a part of writing in my life, and you made it feel like I was hearing it for the first time. I can’t even express what that means to me. Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at an artist.
It truly was beautiful, and I think Cassadee has secured her spot in the top eight with that performance.

I am just NOT as impressed as everyone else is I guess. But I did appreciate that she connected to this song and could relate to it. So that added to it. This was not a bad performance by any means but it was not season 3 winner type either. Def. better than my girl from Michigan Sylvia and better than Melanie too.
I don’t know, after several disappointing weeks, I’d almost given up hope in Cassadee Pope. It felt like she wasn’t living up to the expectations of a seasoned rocker and was only being kept in the competition by an enormous pre-existing fanbase!
This hit the spot for me: it wasn’t a straight out rock song that we could compare Cassadee to, it was outside her genre, so she was able to do her own thing with it. It feels like she had to think on her feet and interpret the song, rather than be an Avril Lavigne copy.
I agree Gerard she hasn’t lived up to the seasoned rocker she supposedly is. I remember her back in the day even found an mp3 on my pc from back in the day when she was with the band. Even then she didnt come off as a rocker. Was more pop than rock. I really think she should go country… last night proved it…this seems to be a genre better suited for her at least if she wants to be a solo artist.
