The Big C Hereafter spoilers: Episode 3, Quality Of Death
This final season of The Big C is already heartbreaking. Cathy has decided to call time on her chemotherapy, and that means accepting her inevitable death. The previous episode, You Can’t Take It With You saw her trying to remain in control by ‘fixing’ it for Paul to have a date with a potential new partner. Morbid? Absolutely. But things ended on a much more worrying note when Cathy woke up the next morning and couldn’t remember who Paul was.
As Cathy’s cancer progresses, these final two episodes will become even more emotional. Quality Of Death sees Cathy moved to a hospice as her condition worsens. But Sean engages in a spot of kidnapping when Cathy tells him that the ward cat predicts the death of patients – if it’s found in your bed, you’ll be the next to die. And since Sean’s become uber-superstitious, he decides to protect his sister by getting rid of the cat…
Following on from Andrea’s university woes, Cathy will go on to model the funeral gown that she designs. It’s incredibly ‘Queen Tut’, as it borrows heavily from the golds and turquoises in Tutankhamun’s tomb.
On a more sombre note, Cathy has a conversation with her shrink. She tells her that she actually likes life at the hospice, and that she’s more comfortable there than at home. The conversations between these two are come of the most frank and morbid in the show this year – the shrink seems intent on getting Cathy to admit the blunt truth of her situation, while Cathy is still trying to distract herself with her mission to learn The Entertainer on piano.
