Stereo Hogzz perform Rhythm Nation on X Factor USA
Stereo Hogzz opened the second week of X Factor USA live shows with a storming cover of Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation. It was an opportunity for their mentor, Paula Abdul, to showcase a track from her old pal, and to also showcase Stereo Hogzz’s amazing footwork.
We got to see Paula putting the group through their paces, and Simon Cowell couldn’t resist the urge to declare this performance “make or break” for the five-piece. And he wasn’t wrong: with only a week to prepare vocal harmonies and tight choreography, Stereo Hogzz must have been feeling the pressure to improve upon their astonishing Week 1 performance of Try A Little Tenderness.
On balance, I don’t think this week’s performance of Rhythm Nation was a match for their amazing first live performance on the show. The Hogzz experienced a few vocal wobbles in places – mostly on harmonies early on, but also some of the lead vocals weren’t quite strong enough. The visuals of the marching army behind the group were lavish enough to have been on any Jackson (Michael or Janet) tour, but the backing dancers often distracted us from the visual spectacle of the boys strutting their stuff!
However, the Stereo Hogzz still came off smiling – the dancing was top notch, and the vocals – though they had room for improvement – were still good enough. Ultimately, the song showed off the boys’ star power and their ability to entertain on every level. Count me as a fan!
What the Judges said:
- LA Reid: Alright guys, that was great. So the whole idea here is “do you have what it takes to be a star?” And you know what? You’ve shown us that you absolutely have what it takes to be a star.
- Nicole Scherzinger: The Stereo Hogzz have landed. I was watching that and I was like “What show is this? This is The X Factor.” I come from a singing and dancing group. I know how hard it is to do both and make it look so easy. Much respect to you boys, you should be so proud!
- Simon Cowell: I was in such a good mood until this, because Miss Smug on my right is so happy. Not only do I think you are one of the best groups I’ve seen on one of these competitions, but I work for a record label and I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you. That to me was a masterclass of choreography, being slick, vocals, charisma. I just wish I was mentoring you. This is so annoying.
- Paula Abdul: I’m so proud of you. As a choreographer, you make my life so interesting and exciting. As a mentor, you’re fantastic students.
So, X-Fans, what did you think of the Stereo Hogzz latest performance? Spill the beans in the comments!
