Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2012 Nominations are in…
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation have just released the list of nominees for induction in 2012! Among the high-profile names on the list are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses, Heart and…Donna Summer!
Joining these luminaries is a mixed bag of other nominees – some household names, some odd choices and some obscure folks we’ve never heard of. What is a Beastie Boy, anyway? (joke, joke…) The full list of nominees is here (in alphabetical order, no less):
- Beastie Boys
- The Cure
- Eric B. & Rakim
- Guns ‘N Roses
- Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
- Freddie King
- Laura Nyro
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Rufus with Chaka Khan
- The Small Faces/The Faces
- The Spinners
- Donna Summer
Announcing the list of nominees, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President Joel Peresman said:
The 2012 Nominees embody the broad scope of what ‘rock and roll’ means. From vocal groups to hip hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On a personal level, I’m pleased to see both Guns N’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on that list. Both deserve the recognition, especially for their more groundbreaking early material. But sometimes magic happens at the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, and how many of us live in hope that the original GNR lineup would reform for a couple of old hits? Remember Jason Newsted joining Metallica for their induction? Just like that.
Given that we don’t slavishly follow the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions, does anyone out there want to speculate on who the hot favourites are to become inductees? If it was Donovan, for example, I might just burst into tears.
More importantly, who do you think deserves to be inducted? And who has been mercilessly shunned by the nominations process?
