The Newsroom spoilers: Season 2 Finale Ends with ‘Election Night, Part II’

The last episode of HBO’s drama, The Newsroom, leaves us with the crushing aftermath of ACN’s retraction of the Genoa story. The cruel turn of events became more painful when Leona Lansing (Jessica Lange) refuses to accept Will (Jeff Daniels), Charlie (Sam Waterston) and Mac’s (Emily Mortimer) resignations. In the first installment of the season’s two-part finale, Charlie pleads Reese (Chris Messina) to let them go, and Will did Mac a favor by firing her by the end of the show’s broadcast.

Meanwhile, the ACN staff are walking on eggshells, but it doesn’t help that Jim (John Gallagher, Jr.) has made a minute yet significant mistake — and decides to cover it up with Maggie (Alison Pill).

In the promo for the next episode, ‘Election Night, Part II’, Charlie is once again seen talking to a sober Leona. Mac is nowhere in the scenes and by the end of the clip, Will is frantically looking for her around the newsroom.

A synopsis for The Newsroom‘s season finale was also released by HBO:

As election night 2012 winds down, Will and Charlie await a decision from Reese (Chris Messina) that may impact their future at ACN, and that of the entire senior staff. Sloan learns the identity of the anonymous winning bidder for her book; Don (Thomas Sadoski) discusses a countersuit against Jerry (Hamish Linklater) with Rebecca (Marcia Gay Harden); Neal turns to Hallie (Grace Gummer) for help giving Mac a parting gift; Jim tries to make peace with Lisa (Kelen Coleman), encouraging Maggie (Alison Pill) to do the same; Will has a revelation while Charlie is sharing his.

There are a lot of revelations that may happen in the finale, including Sloan’s book buyer, and a supposed revelation from both Will and Charlie.

In a scoop from TVLine, there will be “several huge moments between Will and Mac — at least one of which includes mention of the Tiffany’s ring Will bought last season.” Does this mean the end of Will and Mac’s professional relationship and the beginning of a (second) romantic one?

On other matters, the finale might also show Jim finally getting closure with Lisa — and it would do Maggie tons of good to do so, too.

The season finale of The Newsroom airs Sept. 15 at 10:00 pm on HBO.

  1. This has been my favourite show of the year so far. Sorkin has managed to create so much drama within this show that my wife and I are on the edge of our seats by the end of each episode!

I have a feeling that Leona isn’t going to back up Charlie and Will for very much longer. And after ‘firing’ Mackenzie last week, has she already walked out? I’m kind of hoping that there will be a romantic spark between the two of them by the end of the season, but I also like the tension that’s arisen between them over the last two seasons.

And please tell me Jerry Dantana will get his comeuppance for screwing over the entire ACN staff!
