Mockingbird Lane: Eddie Izzard cast as…Grandpa Munster?
No. Sorry. This one does not make sense. Camp comedian and star of The Riches and many Hollywood movies, Eddie Izzard is expected to sign on to play Grandpa Munster on NBC’s The Munsters reboot.
With his square jaw and slightly blockish profile, we’d have accepted him as a Herman (you remember, the goofy Frankenstein-looking head of the household), but instead he’ll be playing the Dracula-esque madcap inventor, Grandpa. Well, judging by the look of Original Grandpa, Al Lewis in the picture above, they both have a penchant for wearing too much make-up.
The series has been retitled Mockingbird Lane for the reboot. According to sources, the series should have been heading into production by now, but has been delayed by casting difficulties. Presumably they’re stuck trying to choose their Marilyn. Oh, hang on a minute, that’s Smash.
NBC certainly have their work cut out for them with this horror-themed sitcom. The original Munsters was an iconic series, the original dysfunctional family of ghosts and monsters living under one roof. Characters like Herman, Grandpa, Lily, Eddie and everybody else are fondly remembered by several generations. The pressure’s definitely on to get this reboot right and make it work in the 20th century.
If Izzard is signing on, that’s a good sign. His comedic abilities are well documented. But who else can you see attached to Mockingbird Lane?
