Light Wire Theatre impress on America's Got Talent with dinosaur-themed audition
One area in which America’s Got Talent excels is in bringing incredible new combinations of dance and art to the public. Last year it was Silhouettes, and this year we’ve got Light Wire Theatre.
Before the performance, Nick Cannon stepped in to warn the audience that they’d be killing all the lights in the theatre and not to be groping their neighbours. And then the Light Wire people bounced onto the stage. They seem to have custom made costumes that create the impression of lit-up line drawings. Two T-Rex’s battled it out on stage, and were briefly replaced with three enormous dancing flowers. The dinosaurs then returned to the stage.
I loved the act. It was mesmerising because it required you to watch closely. Partly you want to see how the illusion of light is being created, and you’re also engrossed in the narrative of what’s happening on the stage. My only criticism is that it could have been tighter themed, because the spectacle was carrying the story a certain part of the way, and a better story would have made it more engaging. But the potential of the act is almost limitless.
What the judges said:
- Sharon Osbourne: I just love the combination of dance and the world of electronics. I love it. It’s endless the things you can do. And you really were superb with your performance.
- Howard Stern: You know, this is going to sound kind of sappy and you can make fun of me for saying this, but we are the greatest country in the world, we have the most creative people. You’re everything that makes America great. There are so many countries that don’t allow free expression and I applaud your originality. And thank you for lifting everyone’s spirits in this theatre todnight.
- Howie Mandel: Two years ago we had Fighting Gravity, last year we had Team iLuminate. This year, with what you’re doing with dinosaurs and characters and the contraptions you have on your body, you’ve taken it to a whole new level and you’ve topped everything that has been done in the past.
Three yeses. We’ll be seeing if Light Wire Theatre can improve on their initial audition in a few weeks when the live shows kick off!
