First The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug trailer hits the web – heavy on Legolas, light on Baggins
Just what we need on a relatively slow news day: the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug has hit YouTube!
It’s completely loaded with adventure, battle scenes and all the wide and varied creatures of Middle Earth are out in force. Oh, and the one thing that will make Lord Of The Rings fans wee themselves in excitement – the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas!
Two brief observations on that point. 1) Bloom has never looked so CGI. Seriously, his skin may be even smoother than it was during his LotR days, and 2) He also looks a lot like Jack Gleason, better known as Joffrey in Game Of Thrones. Am I right?
Elsewhere, we’ve got Elves versus Dwarves, dwarves floating down rapids in barrels, an appearance from Shelob the spider who seems to have a particular taste for hobbits with the last name of Baggins. Legolas and a hot lady elf debating whether to get involved in someone else’s fight: “When did we allow evil to become stronger than us?”
And those chilling last words: “Was that an earthquake?” To which Balin responds gravely, “That, my lad, was a dragon.”
Cue Bilbo being discovered by Smaug in the Scrooge McDuck’s hall of gold….
Overall, I’m excited. I can almost taste the jumbo popcorn that’s going to be required to survive this movie. One minor criticism is that the CGI is so heavily used at this point, some of the action scenes almost look cartoonish rather than live action. The artwork is as stunning as ever, but I can’t look at those shots of Orlando Bloom without thinking he’s descended to the fifth level of Photoshop Hell, where he’s lost a battle to Gaussian Blur.
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug opens in cinemas December 13.
