Fringe: Final episode spoilers! Will Walter make the ultimate sacrifice?
The final teaser clips are in. The stage has been set for an explosive finale, one that will leave that small core of dedicated fans (that I count myself among) simultaneously satisfied and distraught.
We’ve got the return of September, the rogue Observer who has become human. We’ve got Walter Bishop facing up to the reality that he may have to sacrifice himself in order to save the world. We’ve got a fridge-full of Cortexpihan (YAY!) and a final visit to the Altverse for Olivia Dunham. Watch the trailer for the finale here:
Meanwhile, the Fringe team have managed to lose Michael, the mute Observer child. But Michael being captured by the Observers may have worked to their advantage. Watch this 3 minute scene in which Windmark tries to interrogate “the anomaly” and ends up with a bloody nose. It seems that we’ve barely scratched the surface of Michael’s abilities…
The two-part Fringe series finale airs tomorrow night with Liberty and An Enemy Of Fate. John Noble – who plays the brilliantly madcap scientist Walter Bishop on the show – has this to say about the finale:
The finale, I believe, I think it’s the best finale I’ve ever read, just in terms of being able to tie up the five years, five years of intense work. To be able to pull it together as the way that Joel Wyman did is quite remarkable to me. So I honestly think the fans will be—well they’ll be disappointed. There’s no question because the series is finishing, but I think they’ll be very thrilled and honored by the way that Joel has made that happen.
Can we expect a happy-ever-after ending for Walter, Peter and Olivia? It’s hard to tell. Somewhere in this vague plan to save the world, Walter has accepted that he must sacrifice himself. There’s one get-out clause, however: September’s assertion that “Fate can be changed.”
And, as Olivia revealed last week, she believes that with the timeline reset and the Observers defeated, they may get their daughter back. But is she being too hopeful? Was there even any discussion of where the timeline would be reset to?
One thing’s for sure, we’re in for one hell of a ride! Are you tuning in for tomorrow night’s Fringe finale?
