Fox Cancels So You Think You Can Dance Results Show

Nigel Lythgoe revealed via Twitter over the weekend that So You Think You Can Dance is getting a complete revamp. According to the executive producer, Fox pulled the plug on SYTYCD’s results show.

“#FOX have cancelled(sic) the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY,” he wrote. Fans were upset with the news, scared it meant that the show was on its way out. Lythgoe added hours later, “Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrillwed we have a new series. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”

Though fans are upset, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Judges are more in control of who wins and who loses on SYTYCD. Though America votes, it’s ultimately up to the judges (much like The X Factor). Perhaps instead of waiting for votes overnight, fans have to vote during the show or maybe fans will be cut out of the process all together. Most of the time America gets it wrong anyway.

The biggest concern for anyone in the pop industry is this means one more platform for showcasing new music is gone. MTV doesn’t show anything where artists can perform, so they rely heavily on talent competitions.

The problem with results show is they eat up a lot of FOX’s schedule. If the shows were shorter, perhaps less dramatic and dragged out.. Only half hour, there’d be more room. Fox could squeeze the next big sitcom after the results show instead of devoting all the time to talent competitions.

Regardless, we’re interested to see how the show is reformatted. SYTYCD premieres in mid May, just after American Idol’s finale.
