Dexter speculation: Why are Showtime being so vague about the final season of Dexter?

What the hell is going on with Dexter? We’ve been largely operating under the assumption that the upcoming Season 8 is going to be the final season, but we keep getting mixed messages.

When we went into Season 7, all intelligence from Showtime was that Dexter was going into a nicely controlled cancellation. After all, Michael C. Hall can’t keep cutting up bad guys and dumping them in the Atlantic forever. And with his sister Debra now in on the secret, we got a sense that our (anti-)hero was heading for discovery. But the signals coming from people attached to the show are incredibly vague. Here’s what we know so far:

  1. Dexter Executive Producer Scott Buck teased that he hasn’t yet ruled out a ninth season of the show. He said “while Dexter season 8 will be treated as the final season, there’s still a chance that the show could continue into season 9.” The implication from this post on Screen Rant suggests that Showtime may insist on another season.
  2. The show’s premiere this year has been moved up to summertime (rather than the usual September kick-off), and it’s being used as a lead-in to new ‘fixer’ series Ray Donovan starring Liev Schrieber. Most people have taken this as a signal that the final season of Dexter was being used to introduce fans to Showtime’s replacement series.
  3. Further implying that Dexter will end after season 8, CBS boss Leslie Moonves recently referred to the next season of Dexter as the show’s last. His direct quote was: “We haveRay Donovan coming on, with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June…”

So, what’s happening, Showtime? We’re dying to know. Will the Slice Of Life still be sailing in 2014? Will Dexter still be cutting up bad guys in 20 years time, while hobbling along after a hip-replacement?

The vagueness surrounding the show’s future is piquing our curiosity. If the plan was to give Dexter two more season to wrap up its story, then why keep teasing a continuation? Granted, Season 7 of Dexter was a massive improvement, but then the series does tend to go through serious peaks and troughs. For every Arthur Mitchell, there’s a Miguel Prado.

How I see Dexter finishing…

Dexter, Season 7: Do You See What I See?Personally, I think Dexter’s story has to end. And with LaGuerta dead and Deb and Dexter both standing over her corpse, the stakes are high as we begin Season 8. Showtime should use that momentum to bring Dexter’s story to a thrilling conclusion, one that will satisfy the viewers (should he live, should he die – a question for another day perhaps?).

But what might be a possibility is a spin-off series for one of the characters. Maybe Debra, in a kind of Clarice Starling kind of role as a serial killer hunter. I could watch FBI Agent Morgan swearing along for another few seasons, couldn’t you?

Over to you: Do you think it’s time for Dexter to end on a high, or could you see the series continue for another year? What do you think about a spin-off series?

  1. Paco says:

I want the story of Dexter to go on for 10 years.
I want to hear the musics,
I want to hear his thoughts (so funny some times),
I want to see and hear Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter,David Zayas and all the cast.
