Carlito Olivero stuns the judges on The X Factor USA with Rihanna’s ‘Stay’
Former Menudo member Carlito Olivero was the first auditionee of The X Factor USA’s third season this year. Although he was formerly known as Carlos in that group, Carlito’s story is that he’s a 23 year old barista in Los Angeles. Demi makes us a little uncomfortable when she asks if she can get her coffee order in early. Yikes.
Carlito almost gets himself off to a bad start by dubbing himself the “Latino Chris Brown”. There’s not many positive connotations we can take from that comparison these days. And keeping with the terrible Chris Brown analogy, he chooses to sing Stay by Rihanna.
Luckily, his rendition of Stay is rather good. He’s got a smooth vocal and a relaxed stage presence. He even gets a little carried away when he walks around the judges and sings to the audience. Naturally, Carlito has the right look (he’s got the boyband pedigree, so the ladies are going to love him), and he’s got a solid voice. I actually think he’s got some room for improvement, and hopefully we’ll see that later in the competition.
What the judges said:
- Simon Cowell: I acually like everything about you. I like your voice, I like your charisma. I think you’re really good and there’s no-one around like you at the moment. I thought ‘this kid looks like a real star’.
- Demi Lovato: Your voice actually reminds me of a cross between Frankie J and Trey Songz.
- Paulina Rubio: I adore you.
- Kelly Rowland: We are witnessing a star. Carlito, it’s an absolute yes.
Have a second look at Carlito’s audition for The X Factor. Do you think he’s got the talent to go far in the competition?
