American Idol: Pia Toscano Plans More Ballads for Her Moment in the Spotlight
Pia Toscano has been one of the quietest top 13 American Idol contestants with a booming voice, but she has big plans to stand out since making the final cut.
The New Jersey auditioned told MTV News, “I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back, but I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.”
Toscano, 21, won fans over with her rendition of The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You.” After her performance she was stunned by the reaction from both judges and fans. Randy Jackson even deemed it as one of the best performances the show has ever seen. Steven Tyler deemed her “unbelievable,” while Jennifer Lopez thought it was “out of this world.”
Making it into the Top 13 was a surprise for Toscano who never felt she showed American all she had to offer as she was not one of the highlighted contenders. “I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.”
