Sometimes in life, if all else fails, you’ve got to pucker up and kiss a little ass. Ask Cortez Shaw. He knows.
When Cortez went to audition for American Idol in Galveston, he chose to sing Adele’s Someone Like You. Which literally everyone must sing badly, because Jennifer Lopez was moaning that she rarely heard a version that sounded like the record. Anyhow, Cortez started off badly. The vocals weren’t impressive enough and viewers and judges alike were starting to get bored.

Argh! American Idol’s Galveston auditions kicked off this evening with a perfectly embarrassing audition from Phong Vu. Phong was a slightly awkward 25 year old who was “born and raised” in Houston, Texas. He weeps openly as he talks about the “amazing achievement” that it would be if he became the next American Idol. We, cold hearted b’stards that we are, laugh out loud.

The final auditionee from American Idol’s Galveston auditions was Ramiro Garcia. Ramiro’s story is a truly remarkable one. He was actually born without ears.
Normally when a reality TV auditionee says they were born different, we roll our eyes and prepare for a bad audition. However, Ramiro’s story really stands out. He was missing one ear and the other one was only partially formed with just and ear lobe. His parent were told that he would grow up deaf and mute.

The face of responsible parenting, meet Kristine Osorio, a soon-to-be-divorcee who spent the money intended to pay her lawyer on a plane ticket to attend the American Idol auditions in Galveston. On one hand, it sounds like the perfect risk – winning Idol would represent a huge payday for Kristine, and presumably help her family immensely. But on the other hand, if she fails, she’s worsened their financial situation for a reckless gamble!
If Kristine was someone you knew, would you think they were being smart or incredibly dumb auditioning for American Idol?

Formerly rejected American Idol hopeful Baylie Brown last auditioned for the show five years ago when she was 16. Back then she made it to Hollywood and group round before being rejected after a disasterous ‘forgetting the lyrics’ incident.
Now 21 years old, and seemingly much wiser, Nashville resident Baylie returns to Galveston to audition for the show once more. For those of us who weren’t watching Idol five years ago, we get to watch her original audition and relive what looked to be a rather unpleasant personality clash with her two Jersey-girl group members. Speaking about her first audition:

Are you ready for tomboyish teenaged deer hunter, Skylar Laine? We see our latest American Idol hopeful auditioning in Galveston, riding a 4×4 and working in the family store. The seventeen year old comes across a spunky and fun – a real spitfire personality that leaves the Idol judges in no doubt what they’re dealing with.
We see Skylar out a-hunting in the woods, and then there’s a bizarre small town focus on her family-run store. It’s even more bizarre when you consider that all the produce is blurry. Except for the fridge with the Coca Cola in it. I wonder why that could be?

Savannah, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Aspen are done. What will Houston auditions bring us tonight? One can only hope a little less Magic and a lot more Shelby. Note: Kelly Clarkson was discovered in Houston. Read more & comment »

TISSUES AT THE READY, GEEKS! You heard me. Chuck is hanging up his spy-boots (if indeed spies do have regulation boots) this Friday with a two-hour special that promises to be a tear-jerker.
Goodbye to the Buy More. Goodbye to Big Mike, Morgan, Casey, Sarah, and all those guys. Goodbye to Castle and to Beckman. Oh God, I can’t take it anymore…. *runs sobbing from the room*

Kiefer Sutherland’s latest TV series, Touch, premiered on FOX last night. In the series, Sutherland plays Martin Bohm, a single father who’s struggling to raise his special-needs son. Jake (played by David Mazouz) hasn’t spoken since birth, but has a fascination with numbers and can’t bear to be touched by anyone.
However, this being a venture masterminded by Tim Kring, the scope of the show is much larger than Martin and his child. There’s a wider cast, involving an aspiring Iraqi stand-up comedian (Abdul), and characters in far flung places that Kring should probably avoid. Like Dublin, Ireland. Lest you confuse it with another Dublin, the place where Tim’s most one-dimensional characters come from. Or Tokyo.

We’ve been struggling tonight to keep our American Idol commentary positive, but the truth is, the Aspen auditions were as flat as a slashed tyre. At times it felt like the judges were handing out golden tickets because they had a quota to get rid of, rather than because they’d found earth-shattering talent.
